Movie Run Lola Run Film Studies Essay Cinema that interests me is cinema about openings, unresolved questions and experiements, †¦ without refusing chaos, chance, destiny or the unexpected. This quote by Tom Tykwer (Composer), epitomizes how he is trying to explore the range of possibilities in film. Also making it distinctive to draw in the audience by having open ended possibilities in film. The movie Run lola run directed by Tom Tykwer and the red tree written by shaun tan, both establish two core ideas which are chance and time. The use of a variety of techniques create distinctively visual images that are highly distinctive. Chance is an idea which is clearly portrayed in both texts. In the movie, Run lola run, the director uses flash forwards to empitomize this idea of chance. The audience witnesses the lives change for the people that lola bumbs into on her journeys, and how their lives change each time to how lols life changes. This is seen with the lady with the pram that lola encounters each time as she beggings her run. This symbolises the unpredictability of life. Lolas destiny in each three stories, so do the lives of the people that she sees. The use of the fast non-digetic sound of the clicking of the camera, allows the audience to feel a sense of urgency. This reflects the idea of fate, that our choices, circumstnces and actions are all connected with those whom we encounter in life. The audience gains a sense of knowledge and is made aware that their life is unpredictable and their actions affect others. Furthermore, the use of characterisation is evident in the main character Lola. The idea of using a female as the protagonist of the film is what makes this post-modern film so distinctive to all the other films in todays society. As a result, lola feels at time, that she isnt in control of her destiny and uses her loud, high-pitched scream to change that. The reoccurring digetic sound of lolas scream is mainly evident in the casino scene, where there is a close-up on Lolas face as she screams to control her destiny with the ball to land on the number 20, as she plays the ultimate game of chance. The audience is made to feel anxious as the wait to see the result of her scream. Hence the idea of chance is also presented in the picture book, The red tree. The metaphore the world is a deaf machine, is used in conjuction with the dull colours used to portray that the persona, the little girl, feels unheard and fears that her destiny will be to end up alone and not belong in society. The reader is automatically drawn to empathise with the persona as how a little girl can be unheard and be left all alone. Thus, the use of composiotion layout is used in the middle of the picture book. Where the vector image is a game board which symbolises chance and many paths, also it is evident that the girl in the corner of the page is holding a dice, this dice represents the idea of fate. This illustrates to the reader that the persona believes that her life is a game and also she is unsure of the future. All the above techniques used in both the film Run lola run and the picture book the red tree influence the idea of chance and the use of visual techniques are what makes these texts both so distinctively visual. Time is an important idea in both texts which is constantly reoccurring. At the beginning of the movie run lola run, the opening credits, an animated lola is seen running towards a clock as the sound effects of tick tocking sounds. Allow the audience to be aware of the importance of time in this film. Hence, the close upshot of the pendukm grand-father clock in the opening credits, helps aid the importance of time. The reaccuring motif of clocks and the number 20, 20 minutes to save mani, generates drama and exicitment, also reminding the audience of lolas race against time. Furthermore, the audience is with lola in her journey for the real time of 20 minutes. This gives the audience the knowledge of what lola actually completes in 20 minutes. This technique is what makes this post-modern film so distinctively visual. Furthermore, the use of split screen image is constantly reaccuring in the tri-part structure of the film. This is shown in the multiple scences between mani, lola and the town clock, as lola competes against time to get to mani and save him. This is used to engange the audience and make them wonder what is going to happen next and allow them to wonder if she will make it in time. Simliarily the idea of time is present in the picture book, the red tree with the reoccurring motif of the red leaf. The persona at the start of the novel doesnt pay attention to it, however towards the end of the book she notices it and it is evident that a smile begins to form on her face. This is used to symbolise to the reader that it takes time for a good outcome to occur also that in ones life timing is everything. Furthermore the repition of and wait.. symbolises that the persona is just waiting for something to happen. This makes the reader feel sympathetic to the little girl. This visual technique is used to make both texts so distinctively visual. Also the different events in each of the characters life, helps shape the texts to be unique. In conclusion, the movie run lola run and the picture book the red tree the use of many visual and aural techniques has created texts that are portrayed to be distinctively visual.

This essay will attempt to highlight and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the three main theories of counselling within the module covered this term. The three approaches in discussion are psychodynamics, cognitive behavioural and humanistic. The psychodynamic theory originated from Sigmund Freud, a medical doctor and philosopher (1856 - 1939) founded in the 1900s. Freud developed his ideas whilst working as a psychiatrist in Vienna, collecting information from his patients such as feelings, thoughts and early childhood experiences. The psychodynamic theory focuses on the unconscious mind. Freud’s credence is that different mental forces operate in the mind. The unconscious mind can be described as being like an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg represents the part of the mind that is conscious, everyday thoughts. The iceberg just below the water’s surface represents the pre conscious, thoughts and information that can be retrieved easily. And finally the base of the iceberg is the unconscious part of the mind where fears, traumas and bad experiences are contained, almost impossible to retrieve. Freud argued that slips of the tongue are repressed expressions made by the person unknowingly. The term used for this is a Freudian slip. Freud emphasized that early childhood experiences are important to the development of the adult personality, proposing that childhood development took place over five stages; oral, anal. Phallic, latent and genital. The phallic stage is the most important stage which contains the Oedipus complex. This is where the child (age 4 - 6 yrs) posses the opposite sex parent and wants rid of the same sex parent. Freud argued that if the conflict is not resolved in childhood then it could cause ... ... objectively discoverable facts. This essay has discussed the three main approaches in counselling, looking at both strengths and weaknesses of each. It is evident that every theory is embedded in historical and cultural issues. Although the three approaches have the same initial focus, to enable clients to make conscious their personal meanings and bring them into a place of awareness. It is clear that there is no right or wrong approach, each has contributed to science and society. Montresor

The murder of Fortunato, executed in a   gruesome manner in Edgar Allan Poe’s 1846 tale The Cask of Amontillado, is a classic example of the premeditated crime.Its perpetrator, Montresor, was actuated by malicious intent, the circumstances surrounding it showed evident premeditation and meticulous planning, and he executed it in such a way as to avoid suspicion and punishment.Montresor’s motive was simple: to avenge an insult, of which details the author does not tell us.   He confides that he is of a vindictive nature,   not be satisfied with the simple act of inflicting punishment on his tormentor. He must avenge himself in cold blood, ensuring that the victim would know he delivered the fatal blow, and escape unpunished (1).Montresor’s plan was simple enough: let Fortunato accompany him to the underground wine vaults and there, through treachery and deceit, chain him to the wall and entomb him alive.  Ã‚  Ã‚   He   cunningly devised a plan to lure Fo rtunato into his trap.  Ã‚  Ã‚   Fortunato according to the author, â€Å"prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine† (1).   He knew his friend would not be able to resist showing off his expertise in judging old vintages like the Amontillado.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Himself being skilled in Italian wine, Montresor had the perfect cover for inviting his prey into the catacombs.To escape suspicion, Montresor had to do it at such time when people would least notice something was amiss.  Ã‚  Ã‚   He thought the height of the carnival season, particularly at night when merrymakers would be wildly drunk and     carousing on the streets, would be the perfect time to carry out his plan.  Ã‚  Ã‚   The author does not tell us if he wore a costume, but Fortunato was dressed as a clown, bells and all, and people would not have recognized him, or remembered who he was last seen with.  Ã‚   â€Å"The man,† described the author, â€Å"wore motley.  Ã‚   He had on a tight-fit ting part-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells†(1).Montresor the avenger complimented his friend on â€Å"how remarkably well† he looked, feigning goodwill and friendship so as not to arouse any suspicion, of which there really was no need.  Ã‚   His friend clearly had no idea what he was up to.  Ã‚   Then the plotter subtly released the bait: he told Fortunato of his purchase of â€Å"a pipe of what passes for Amontillado† and his doubts thereof.  Ã‚   He had gone to the extent of buying the ancient cask in order to have a credible and irresistible cover for extending an invitation to his quarry. Knowing Fortunato well, Montresor pretended to be on his way to consult Luchresi, another vintage expert, whom Fortunato detested.   He appealed to Fortunato’s vanity, saying, â€Å"And yet some fools will have it that his taste is a match for your own†(1).Thinking like a criminal, Montresor had carefully avoided making any threats against Fortunato, knowing any slight hostility or animosity between them could later on be picked up by the police and lead to suspicion against him. On the contrary, he was careful to cultivate his friendship. On the night appointed, as they met at the carnival, his friend accosted him â€Å"with excessive warmth†. Montresor greeted him with equal pleasure, although for a different, sinister reason.On their way to the catacombs, Montresor continually feigned concern for Fortunato, who was being wracked by violent coughing, entreating him to return, although he knew his friend in his drunken state would not turn back.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   He actually added to his intoxication by making him drink some more from the bottles of Medoc that lay about their path (2).  Montresor showed sardonic wit as they proceeded on their way.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Fortunato was asking him for a sign that he was indeed a member of the Masonic brotherhood as Montresor claimed.  Ã‚   I n reply Montresor produced a trowel from the folds of his roquelaire.  Ã‚  Ã‚   Fortunato the clown laughed it off as a joke (3).Passing through the catacombs, they finally arrived at the predetermined scene of the crime, which lay at the remotest end of the crypt.  Ã‚  Ã‚   Here was an interior crypt or recess whose contents of skeletal remains had been thrown off.   It was â€Å"backed by one of their circumscribing walls of solid granite†(4).Taking advantage of Fortunato’s weakened and drunken state, while he was bewildered upon finding himself in a cul-de-sac, Montresor quickly bound him to the granite wall.  Ã‚   Then Montresor produced from the pile of bones a quantity of building stone and mortar and with his trowel began mixing them and walling up the entrance of the niche.Even after having secured his victim, Montresor was still feigning concern for Fortunato, showing him the dampness caused by the nitre, and entreating him to return.  Ã‚  Ã‚   The r ealization by Fortunato of his doomed state was slow in coming.  Ã‚   It only came later when, having seen the wall rising higher and higher, and as his intoxication gradually wore off, he saw the horrible reality of the crime being committed against him.   Before he was completely enclosed, Fortunato apparently lost his sanity.â€Å"A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back,† writes the author.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Fearful that his victim might have escaped, he unsheathed his rapier (4).  Ã‚   Here is another proof that Montresor exercised forethought, arming himself for the trip just in case things went awry.As we consider the facts, it is clear that Montresor thought of every detail to carry out his vow of revenge, of which two foremost considerations must be satisfied: 1) the avenger was not to be caught, and 2) he must â€Å"make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.à ¢â‚¬ Ã‚     Ã‚  All his acts pointed to careful planning and execution of the crime: cultivating affection towards Fortunato, buying the cask of Amontillado, bringing the mortar and stone   to the secret niche, waiting for the height of the carnival season to carry out the plan.   The police must have looked for Fortunato in the usual places except in the crypt.Knowing he was in frail health, they must have written him off as having drunk away the night and ended up a victim of some drunken brawl or robbery.     Ã‚  The old rampart of bones that covered the niche was not disturbed for half a century (5).   Even if they could produce some circumstantial evidence against Montresor, like being last seen with him,   such evidence would not stand in court, as the corpus delicti must first be proved.  Ã‚   His crime was not found in his lifetime.  Ã‚   Thus he lived up to the motto of the Montresors: nemo me impune lacessit.WORK CITEDPoe, Edgar Allan.   â€Å"The Cas k of Amontillado†.  Ã‚   15 February 2007.

In 1991, the worst disaster happened in the Arabian Gulf, and it was closed to my hometown. It was an oil spill into the gulf sea. As well as this, more than 85% of the consumed around the world comes from fossil fuel. Unlike renewable energy, fossil energy notably pollutes our countries. Both of them have different capacities to store and provide energy. Currently, the significant difference between solar and wind power is the amount of energy available. According to Ball (2012), in â€Å" Tough Love for Renewable Energy,† solar energy currently produces approximately 0.1 of all energy in the world, whereas wind power provides about 1.4% of global electricity. This means that sunlight energy has a little contribution to give the world its need for electricity, while wind power is more popular than solar energy by providing much more energy. This shows the ability of producing renewable energy. In the article† Rooftop Power,† Priensitz, (2010) writes this amount of energy is provided by using solar panels and wind turbines. On the other hand, in the future, both solar and wind power have the same amount of producing energy. Studies show that both solar and wind power are able to produce about 10% of world electricity (Ball, 2012). These studies are predicated on the amount of renewable energy in 2035. In other words, renewable energy will increase steadily in the fu ture. As shown in the studies, renewable power will not supplant the fossil fuels energy because conventional energy is cheaper. Accordingly,
